This brilliant follow-up up to the first volume Too Much Pain features a further 24 rarities exhumed from the vaults of King and its affiliated labels--Federal, De Luxe and Hollywood. Once again there's a substantial selection of deep Southern soul balladry, but this time the track listing is even more varied, encompassing uptown soul, blues-soul and group harmonies. A showcase for vocal versatility, styles range from the grittier-than-a-dirtbike-tyre rasp of Allison to the heroically high tenor of Junior McCants. Although these artists are far from familiar--Oscar Toney Jr is probably the best known name here--the quality throughout is top-notch. Standouts include the urbane sophistication of Pat Lundy's "One Woman" and the doo-wop tinged deep soul of LH & The Memphis Sounds' "House Full Of Rooms". --Chris King
