Dire Straits was a British rock band formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar), David Knopfler (guitar), John Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums). Known for their clean guitar sound, storytelling lyrics, and blues-rock influences, they became one of the best-selling rock bands of all time.

Their self-titled debut album (1978) featured Sultans of Swing, which became a major hit. They achieved global success with Brothers in Arms (1985), featuring Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, and the title track, which helped define the MTV era.

Despite their massive popularity, Dire Straits disbanded in 1995, with Mark Knopfler focusing on a solo career. Their legacy endures through their timeless music and influence on rock and blues.
